When Vasco da Gama rounded Africa in the late 1400s he pulled into the beautiful protected bay of Inhambane to replenish stocks and to explore. He took an immediate liking to the place and its people and named it Terra de Boa Gente or ‘Land of the Gentle People’.
Inhambane is served by an airport and a port, and has petrol stations, banks, public phones, shops, markets, a bus terminus and a museum. Side-walk cafes are dotted along the narrow streets. There are some noteworthy sights for the culture vultures including the 200 year old Cathedral of Our Lady of Conception, the Governor’s Palace, the Municipal buildings, and the museum. The town itself is set on the bay of Inhambane, looking across to Maxixe. Enjoy a drink at the harbour whilst watching the dhows cruise across the bay. It is possible to hire a dhow to sail you around the bay.
The town of Inhambane is only a 40 minute drive (24kms) from Paindane Beach Resort and offers a daily food market, restaurants and other sight-seeing spots. What makes the town unique is its heritage. Inhambane is one of the oldest towns in Southern Mozambique. The old Portuguese architecture and tropical surroundings make the town a historical must-see for every tourist.
The outstanding element of Paindane, also known as Cabo des Correntes (Bay of Currents), because of the sometimes strong currents, is the reef which protrudes north approximately 1200 meters diagonally to the beach, which forms a natural bay which is protected from the destruction of powerful ocean currents and waves. This bay is ideal for the launching of boats as well as snorkeling, swimming and bathing. Paindane bay is home to a coral garden, acclaimed to be one of the best on the African coast. The varieties of soft and hard coral boast an array of colours that must be seen to be believed. With crystal clear waters, flourishing coral reefs and a host of world-class facilities, this is one of the Indian Ocean coastline's best-kept secrets.
